Starring Ewan McGregor and Pete Postletwaite as two miners living in a drab mining town somewhere in Great Britain. They play in the mine's brass band and hang out in the pub when they're not working. The mine they work at is due to close, because it's not very profitable anymore. Or is it? That's where the beautiful Gloria comes in, a big city girl with her roots in the small mining town.
She's there to write an assesment of the mine and see if it might be worth it to keep things up and running. And she happens to play the flugel as well! When she walks into the rehearsal room asking to play along, the members of the band are reluctant at first, but after a fashion, and hearing that a legendary member of their band actually was Gloria's grandfather, she can join in.
It turns out that she's an awesome flugel-player and the band asks her to play along in the contests they take part in. This leads to an awkward situation, since she's considered "management" of the mine and it leads to a romance between Andy (McGregor) and Gloria.
The story's quite sweet and a very intriguing view of the mining town societies at the end of the mining era is given. The acting is very acceptable, although at times it seems a bit too much for the good of the story. The music is great if you're into brass band music and I must admit that it gave me goosebumps at times.
All in all, this movie goes down in the annals of the forum rated a staggering 7.5/10!

O, yes I saw this one w few years ago, I rented it I thought it was ok, but nothing really special, would give it
But think it is not really a drama, shouldn't this go more into the comedie/drama part?

Yeah...well...a mine closing down, people losing their jobs, a guy dying a slow and painful death...it's all pretty dramatic...
