Omega Doom - Albert Pyun (1997)

It's dystopian. It features Rutger Hauer. It's made in the 90s and it shows. It's a Yojimbo-inspired story.

It's Omega Doom...

Obviously, I had to watch this movie and I wasn't disappointed. It's not for the kind of people who want nothing but the best, but definetly a film to check out if you're into the likes of Cherry 2000, Bladerunner or Mad Max. It's less hectic then the aforementioned though.

Though the story is very obviously based on Yojimbo, the gang war is quickly over (and less cleverly played, I might add) and there is a more "humanistic" approach to the plot, even though I'm not sure the word humanistic is appropiate in a movie which has a 99% robot cast

The effects are practically non-existent, a few laserblasts and some robotic/cyberpunk makeup. Oh, let's not forget the Head. A decapitated android head that is. Which goes through three different new bodies in the course of the movie, the last one being a woman's body with his head "morphed" on. The camera-work is quite nice, a wide angle lens is used a lot to simulate a robotic way of seeing things, which works really well...

Awesome movie for genre-lovers, other people, don't even bother.
