| The Truman ShowFrom Peter Weir IMDB - Quote :
- Truman Burbank lives a happy life. However, what he doesn't know is that his life is actually the focus of a reality TV show aired since his birth, that he's the star, his hometown is a giant set piece, and everyone around him is an actor going by a script.
I'm normally not a big fan of Jim Carrey, at least not in comedies. Really hates the exagerations, fake faces expression.... He really anows me But this movie is great, the story is really nice although a bit predictable I would give it a well deserved

| To me, Scifi is more like spaceships, aliens, the end of the world, robots, etc. Anyway.... | |

| There are several types of sci-fi: Anticipation (= vision of the future) Hard Science (= scientific prospectives) cyberpunk (= appocalyptic / ultra technologic future / robots...) Space Opera (= with the space ships and co) Uchronia (= future with a different past as ours) .... | |

| Yeah, but I don't think it's easy to defend the Truman Show as Anticipation... 1984 is Anticipation, the Matrix is Anticipation, Minority Report is Anticipation... The Truman Show is funny, made as a comedy...not SF But this ofcourse is just my opinion... /edit: it DOES have certain "big brother" elements, but are those elements, the things that make 1984 SF? I think those are the elements that make 1984 a thriller | |

| The Matrix is not anticipation, is it? Anticipation is actually a type a sci-fi that is very easy and close to relate to our present time. So by simply taking the elements we know of today and pushing them a bit further: in that sense The Truman show has a anticipation plot in my opinion. Cause so far, we haven't been able to re-create a big brother show with fake sun rising, fake sky, fake sea.... So 1984 is also anticipation yes or Children of men for instance which doesn't have much pure sci-fi in it but is an anticipation one But yes, overall it is a comedy with an anticipation plot | |

But yes, overall it is a comedy with an anticipation plot The Matrix is a vision of the (far away) future, so you COULD classify it as an Anticipation film, it's WAAAAAY more Cyberpunk though of course, I know that And, just for the sake of argument (we ARE moviefreaks after all ): Does a plot which involves anticipation automatically makes a movie Scifi, when no real other Scifi elements are present? It doesn't. Not in my Universe at least. The fake sun etc. may be difficult to realize using recent technology, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that it are typical Scifi elements. I think the plot's easier described as a paranoia one (it's equally farfetched in my eyes ) | |
