REVIEW OF THE WEEK - Avanti! - Billy Wilder (1972) Avanti!72

Avanti! @ IMDb

After watching Pecker (review coming up in a minute), I decided to watch some television and fell right into the opening titles of "Avanti!". I liked the looks of it (it was immediately clear that it was some sort of romantic comedy) and didn't know what else to watch, so I kind of stuck with it Happy2

I was pleasantly surprised! It's not a movie to watch if you want a difficult story or a surprising plot, but when you're feeling like watching something easy on the mind and funny, this might be a good pick.

There's this rich dude, who's father is killed in an accident during his holiday in Italy. Then, there's this working class girl, who's mother is killed in an accident during her holiday in Italy. It turns out that the mother and father used to be lovers for 10 years, coming to the same hotel 1 month a year all that time.
There is some trouble obtaining the right documents and after some initial hateful encounters, the rich dude and the working class girl fall in love (ofcourse Laughing)
Add to this disappearing bodies, dry humour and a very small blackmail/murder subplot and you have a movie that's just a bit too long for it's own good (it runs for 144 minutes Razz).

The acting is what you can expect from a 1970's romantic comedy, quite shallow, but in a good way that fits the movie like a glove. The cinematography is nothing special, just following the book of how to make a perfect shot.

What I really liked about the movie, now I think about it, was the fact that the whole feel of the film is like a 1940's romantic musical. It's all happy happy joy joy, with nothing serious to think about, despite dealing with the deaths of the parents of the main characters.

All in all: 7.8/10!
