In my head, I gave this film the alternative title of 'Roma MTV', because, well, basically that's what it is. Without narration, the journey and diaspora of the Roma (gypsies) is told as a series of music videos and impression shots.
Travelling westwards from Rajahstan (India) to Spain, by way of Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and France, the film follows the Roma and shows how they live .
Quote :
earthbound nomads in the hot deserts of Asia, ironsmiths and abjectly poor tree-dwellers in the frozen plains of Eastern Europe, and craftspeople and traders in the hills and seasides of north Africa and western Europe. It also illustrates the similarities in travel habits, musical tones (spoons, open drums, and string-based rhythms) and song themes (celebration of travel and perceived rejection by sedentary locals).
A really beautiful film, especially if you're into this kind of music (however diverse it may be). Tony Gatlif, the director, also made a few other good movies, all of them dealing with gypsies and/or nomads of some kind.
(This second song has earned a lifelong VIP spot on my iPod)

I really want to see this one I have seen a few movies from Tony Gatlif and I really like his style. A bit of a mix between Kusturica and Ken Loach This one is on my list for a long time, maybe it is time to look for it
